Z głębokim smutkiem informujemy, że 29 marca br. zmarła prof. Hanna Pappius, wybitny naukowiec, profesor Uniwersytetu McGill, wielka przyjaciółka Polskiego Instytutu Naukowego w Kanadzie.
Hanna Maria Pappius (1925 – 2023) przybyła do Kanady z Londynu, gdzie jej ojciec, płk lotnictwa Bogdan Kwieciński pełnił od roku 1937 obowiązki attaché wojskowego ambasady RP. Po ukończeniu studiów na Uniwersytecie McGill i obronie pracy doktorskiej Hanna Pappius rozpoczęła pracę naukową na Wydziale Neurologii. Po kilku latach została pierwszą kobietą profesorem tego wydziału.
Profesor Pappius była od czasu studiów blisko związana z Polskim Instytutem Naukowym w Kanadzie. W latach 1988 – 2015 pełniła obowiązki dyrektorki Biblioteki Polskiej i jednocześnie vice-prezeski Instytutu.
Na wniosek Instytutu, Gubernator Generalny Kanady, Julie Payette odznaczyła w roku 2019 prof. Hannę Pappius Orderem Kanady, jednym z najwyższych kanadyjskich odznaczeń państwowych.

It is with great sadness that we learned the news of the passing of Prof. Hanna Pappius, distinguished scientist and friend of the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences.
Hanna Maria Pappius (1925-2023) came to Canada from London where her father, Bogdan Kwieciński, a colonel in the Air Force, had been working as military attaché at the Polish embassy since 1937. After studies at McGill University and defending her PhD thesis, Hanna Pappius started work as a researcher in the Neurology Department. A few years later she became the first woman professor at this department.
Prof. Pappius maintained close links to the Polish Institute from her times as a student. In the years 1988-2015 she was the director of the Polish Library and the vice president of the Institute.
In 2019, at the Polish Institute’s initiative, the Governor General Julie Payette awarded prof. Hanna Pappius the Order of Canada, one of the highest honours of the land.
